Alice Feeney on the inspiration for her novel and book recommendations

Dear Reader,

I first had the idea for Rock paper Scissors during a trip to Scotland in 2018. We drove to a remote property in a terrible storm, which they called the Beast from the East. When we finally arrived it was dark, there was no power and our phones didn’t work.

The place was beautiful – albeit a little spooky – next to a loch, in the middle of a vast valley surrounded by mountains. We were completely isolated with no neighbours, except for a small herd of sheep. Thanks to the snow, we were trapped. Then, late that night, just as we were about to go to bed, a ghostly face appeared in the window. Someone was outside. Watching us.

It turned out to be the caretaker, who drove through the storm to see if we were ok, but the moment definitely sparked an idea! I always think about stories for a long time before I write them. Over three years later, the book is about to be published and is already being made into a Netflix TV series by the producer of The Crown

Books are like children for authors, we’re not really allowed to have favourites, but this is one of mine. If you are about to read Rock Paper Scissors, thank you and I hope you enjoy it!

All best wishes,

Alice

Reading recommendations:

I have always been a bit of a bookworm and I’ve read some wonderful books this year. Here are some of my favourites:

The Last House on Needless Street by Catriona Ward

I loved every perfect page of this book. If you want to read something clever, original, and beautifully written, with an excellent twist, this is the book for you.

The Night She Disappeared by Lisa Jewell

I’m a big Lisa Jewell fan. Every year she writes a book that is even better than her last, and they’re all top drawer. The Night She Disappeared is so addictive it should come with a warning.

For Your Own Good by Samantha Downing

I have read all of this authors’ books, and a Samantha Downing thriller is always a great read. I couldn’t turn the pages fast enough reading this one. A brilliant book!

Walburga Appleseed, author of The Princess and the Prick, talks about changing the narrative and putting a feminist, frank, and funny spin on the fairy tales we all grew up with. “Why are there no girls in this story?” my daughter asked when we first read The Hobbit together. I had… Read More
