Elle, your upcoming novel, Hit or Miss, is out in June. Can you tell us a little about the book? I’m so bad at this! honestly either I tell you nothing or give away the whole thing but I’ll try: Hit Or Miss is about two American college students, Mia, a bookish introvert, and Ethan, athletic, popular captain of the soccer team, both spending their junior year abroad in the UK at the prestigious Hemden University. And the trope version — it’s a sweet and spicy, dual POV, college-set, sports romance, where he falls first, with close proximity, an anxious girl and golden retriever guy, plus a touch of love triangle action. I think that covers it! What was the inspiration for this novel? It was a real combination of things. My own university experience, which was incredibly formative — I was very much a Mia. Moving from the UK to the US and adjusting to all the cultural differences was a big influence, and I really wanted to write a character who deals with anxiety because it’s something I’ve been living with for a long time. I know how difficult it can be to admit you’re struggling and ask for help so Mia’s arc was definitely inspired by my mental health experiences. Who was your favourite character to write? Characters who are my opposites are always my favourite it was definitely Ethan. He really goes on a journey. I also get a very sick buzz out of writing characters we love hate so without giving away any spoilers, Oliver was a true delight. What has been the highlight of publishing this novel so far? I don’t think it’s a secret that Elle is my not-so-secret identity and this is not my first book, but there’s something about changing genres and trying something brand new that feels so exciting. It’s also terrifying but I’m going to pretend that’s not the case. What do you do when you’re not writing? Once a week I co-host a pro-wrestling podcast, called Tights and Fights, and no, that is not a joke. Since moving to Los Angeles, I’ve also become an accidental baseball fan, so you can find me down at Dodger stadium during the season. I also love reading, or watching a TV show or a movie, so an afternoon on the sofa with a good book and my two cats sounds like a great time to me, husband optional. |
