Today, Suzy K Quinn (Don’t Tell Teacher, Not My Daughter) and Mel McGrath (The Guilty Party, Two Wrongs) are joining us for our Christmas Comforts series to share their favourite books to read at this time of year!

I love re-reading the Adrian Mole books around Christmas time, and also Eat Pray Love and really anything feel-good. I also enjoy shorter reads around the festive season, so books like the Unmumsy Mum that you can just dip in and out of are brilliant!

The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey. Christmas always puts me in mind of fairy tales and Eowyn Ivey’s terrific, atmospheric novel is based on a Russian fairy tale and, like all such stories, it’s full of mystery and foreboding. Set in the 1920s, it’s the story of Jack and Mabel, pioneers in the wilds of Alaska. Mabel is haunted by the loss of a child so when a little girl mysteriously appears from the woods, Jack and Mabel decide to take her in. I am always hoping for a white Christmas but I also live in England and I’m a realist, so to avoid disappointment I like to have a book lined up which will transport me to a snowy, wintery, ever-so-slightly sinister landscape even if it’s grey and rainy outside. Eowyn is an Alaska native and her obvious reverence for the icy forests of her home is just one of the wonders of this haunting and magical novel.
